A practical introduction to ecommerce GEO
Where to start with product content, crawl access and your store’s presence in AI search.
At Poise, generative engine optimisation (GEO) means working on how AI search finds, understands and references a store’s products. We start with the questions customers ask and the information available to answer them.
Start with buying questions
Choose a small set of questions about your products and categories. Include comparisons, product requirements and purchase details: “Which hiking boots are waterproof?” or “What does delivery cost?”
Use questions you hear in customer support, on-site search and sales conversations.
Check the product facts
Review names, specifications, variants, prices and availability on your product pages. Check that structured data agrees with what a shopper can read, and that delivery and returns information is easy to find.
Google’s product structured data documentation explains the product details supported in Search. OpenAI’s product discovery overview describes how merchant product feeds support shopping in ChatGPT.
Review access to public pages
Check whether your product and category pages can be reached through internal links, crawled and indexed. Review robots rules and hosting restrictions for the public pages you want search systems to find.
To qualify as a supporting link in Google’s AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to display a Search snippet. Its AI search guidance also recommends keeping important information in text and making structured data consistent with the page.
Keep a record of what appears
Save the questions, tools, dates and answers you check. Note whether your brand appears, which sources are linked and whether the product details are correct.
Repeat those checks after changes to your store. Use referral data alongside them when your analytics records it, so you can compare visibility with visits to your site.
